Warming food for Winter

But, did you all know that winter is also the best season to improve our immunity? Our body engine works better in the winter season and a good digestion process aids in providing better nourishment to the body. This means that we need to make our food choices wisely.
During winters, our bodies tend to crave rich food and warming food helps satisfy the cravings. How do you know which ones are warming foods and what are the best ingredients to include in your winter food?
Warming Foods
The most warming vegetables are the root vegetables – carrot, beets, radish, turnips, yam, potatoes, garlic, etc. Meat, whole grain cereal, nuts, dry fruits and oilseeds - Such as sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, soybean seeds, etc, are also part of warming foods.
Let’s talk about a few and their qualities that make them a winter superfood.
Potatoes and Yams provide the much-needed energy during cold months. They are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, and they are also filling, which helps in beating the winter hunger pangs.
Brussel Sprouts: Rich in rare vitamins like B6 and K, Brussel sprouts are packed with nutrients. Being the easiest to prepare, they make the best winter food.
Winter Squash: A variety of winter squash are available from early fall and last all through winters. Another super easy-to-cook food that has vitamins, magnesium and plenty of fiber.
Fruits: Packed with vitamin C, citrus fruits are the most chosen winter fruits. Pineapple and Papaya are believed to provide warmth during cold months. Dried fruits such as dates are a source of iron, vitamins and calcium.
Basil and Ginger: These two are known for their immunity-boosting qualities and also for protecting against cold, sore throat and fever.
Leafy Greens: Spinach, Fenugreek leaves, Coriander, Celery and Mint have good amounts of antioxidants and help in boosting immunity.
Meat: Egg and Meat have high amounts of protein, iron and calcium. Being hard to digest foods, the body naturally increases the temperature to ease digestion and this in turn will help you keep warm.
Focus on proportion and portion. The best balance is to include one-third protein and two-third vegetables. Make sure to include proteins and carbohydrates in your diet. Apart from diet, focus on your lifestyle too. Exercising makes you feel healthier and keeps your body more energetic. Last but not least, keep yourself well hydrated.
